A modern craftsman home by the sea

Cherry trees line the old country stone driveway to create a welcoming approach to this relaxed, East Coast-style residence. This four-bedroom, four-bath home captures comfortable, coastal style with craftsman finishing perfectly suited to the busy lifestyle of this family of four.

Taking the site into context, the L-shaped design includes an attached carriage house garage with a handy home office tucked under the dormer. Soft grey cedar shake exterior siding trimmed with white sets the palette for the inside, while sea glass-toned custom entry doors, circular nautical windows, and peaked dormers capture the casual yet traditional look the homeowners love.

To enable the family to feel in close proximity as they work, play and entertain, a smooth sense of flow was created between indoor and outdoor living spaces via folding glass doors, which open onto the terraced patios, swimming pool with ocean views, and an outdoor living room centred around a stone fireplace.

Inside, wide-plank white oak floors warm a white and grey interior finished with extensive millwork, including built-in cabinetry, wainscotting, and shiplap ceilings on the main floor. The kitchen’s Carrara marble countertops are a delight to the homeowner, who loves to cook and entertain, and welcomes the etching and patina of regular use.

Twin farmhouse-style sinks complement the kitchen’s effortless sophistication and elevate the island’s functionality as a prep area. Subway tile adds subtle gloss to the matte white cabinetry that conceals the fridge and extra appliances while behind a charming porthole door, a walk-in pantry keeps food prep areas out of sight.

In the guest/pool bathroom and master ensuite, white geometric porcelain tiles complement the Dutch door in the laundry room. In the boys’ bathroom, subway tiles, ship lights, a floating Brockway sink, and whale wallpaper lend playful vintage charm with a nod to the family’s love of sailing. The master bedroom is a serene retreat with plenty of finishing millwork, built-in ensuite cabinetry, a stand-alone soaker tub, and a glass balcony overlooking the pool.

“We really feel that Tom understood our vision throughout this project; he was able to take all of our needs and create something that we love. His attention to detail and dedication to quality workmanship was evident throughout our entire project.”
